Yumi’s Cell: A Representation of How Human Mind’s Work

Yumi’s Cells, a korean drama that base on a popular webtoon with same tittle is making a hit now. This series is currently airng their second season every Friday as an original series from Tving, an OTT platform from South Korea.

Unfortunalety, for the international viewers, it’s kinda diffecult to watch this series legally since this series only available in TVing –which only provide regional service in South Korea— and at Rakuten Viki –which only available in few countries. (Note: the first season is available in Viki and Iqiyi for international fans.)

Nevertheless, this series still become a hit and trending topic among fans and kdrama-lovers all around the globe every weeks.

So, what’s great from Yumi’s Cell?

Firstly, I will say that this drama is truly most fresh drama you’ll find nowadays. This drama is a combination between live action and annimation. And this is actually the first korean drama series that using this combination.

The drama portray a story of Kim Yumi, an ordinary woman, a office worker turn to be writer, in her thirties, and cells in her head –in her mind.

Yes, through the drama You’ll peek, enter, and look around into Yumi’s village which actually represent Yumi’s mind in her head. There are so many cells in there that you can meet, such as: Emotional cell, Rational cell, Anxiety cell , Love cell, Jinx cell, Hunger cell, Lust cell, Fashion cell, Cheapskate cell, Detective cell, Writer cell, and even the cells that represent body part such hand cells, tongue cell, and any more.

All these cells take in charge to every feelings, thoughts, and actions Yumi feels and acts in her whole life, every single time. All the cells talk and communicate to each other and work to build Yumi’s mind and body response towards everything.

In sort, the cells’ village is a representation of how human’s brain or mind works.

Are the cells always agree and in one unite voice?
Of corse not. Not always. You’ll find that there are so many argumentations among the cells. They discuss and argue about almost everything, every feelings, till how to respons a situation Yumi faced in her whole life. They discuss and argue whenever Yumi is in the middle of options, like which one she’ll choose. In example, Fashion cell will argue with Cheapskate cell will argue wether Yumi should buy a new clothes or save the money instead. Even when falling in love,the cells are also discuss and even debating among each other and they give their opinion about the man Yumi loves.

The crowded in the cells’ village is the good image to represent our mind –Human’s mind/brain— whenever we have so many thoughts, questions, or even feeling that make our mind feel so full.

Another example, when Yumi experienced a broken heart or sadness, the village will be hit by dissaster such as heavy rain, storm, and sometimes heavy floods that swept everything. The disaster that represent a broken-heart and sadness moment experienced by human.

In her life, through the dynamics of the cells interaction and decission, of course Yumi not always make a wise and mature or even best choice in her life. She experienced failures, wrong decission, show immaturity of thoughts, and even something that could be labelled as stupidity. And all that’s normal.

Yumi is not a Saint and not a perfect human being, not a master to give people (the vievers) best example to choose the best thing and having the best thoughts in mind. Yumi is a whole human, an ordinary human that able and allowed to has some flaws, but also trying to be and do the best. Yumi and her mind is growing.

Watching Yumi and the cells in her mind should be a really interesting thing to peek into human’s mind and took a lesson to understand it. And in bigger picture, we, he viewers can reflect it to try to know our own mind, how it’s work, and maybe talking with ourselves more.

And even though Yumi is the main character, Yumu’s Cells drama also give us the chance too peek into the other characters’ mind, such as Woong and Babi who both were once had relationship with Yumi’s, and even the other supporting characters like Saeyi and Ahn Daeyeong. These every caracter’s village has their own uniqueness and the diversity about the way they thinking, the way their mind works.

One example, if you looked into Woong’s village, his mind was so different from Yumi. Woong’s village has a distinc function that work like an AI, using algorithm, and the why they portray his way of thinking waslike always using chart, schematic order, and even diagram to show how Woong think about something or some situation before manifesting it into a real reactions or act. This is so good that Woong’s village really represent his personality and really make sense with his background as a game programmer.

As for Babi’ village. Actually, the environment of Babi’s village was really similar to Yumi. Babi’s Emotional Cell even showed as a girl who use a flower har pin. It give me the impression that actually Babi is man that really soft and has such a feminine side in him. And that was true, through all his action and even the way he spoke and communicate, we can conclode that Babi is indeed has a great feminine side in him that make him to be a very soft, affective, and emotional person.

Watching Yumi’s Cell, can lead us into a journey to the within of our own mind, to know and cummonicate with ourselve better. One quotes from Yumi’s Cells that really make me like and considered this drama as the best self-empowerement drama that give me a lesson to love myself more: “You’re the main character in this story.’

Means that every one, every people, and every name is the main character in their own life. It’s okay to be not okay, it’s okay to have flaws and scars. But please love yourself. Make time to talk with your own self and mind, your inner, your entire body, and love them. Your body, cells, and every organs in you are working hard to support your life and your well being.

From this drama, we can learn many things, the journey to know ourselves better, the jorney to master our own mind and self motivations, and even how we interact with other people,  in daily life, in relationships, including how we deal with other people in such situations, problems and obtacle, or just mere a light interaction. It give us  such a perspective how human’s mind works and took a lesson from it so we can implemented it to be more aware about our mind and can improve orselve to be better person, more mature and wiser.
